About Michael Mastro, artist
Following
a printing education at Don Bosco Technical Institute in Los Angeles,
and studying photography under M. Richard Marx, Michael Mastro's
career began before the advent of computers, as what was then
known as a paste-up artist. Over the years, freelancing for advertising
agencies like McDonald & Little, BDA/BBDO, and J Walter Thompson,
and design firms like Direct Drive Design and Think New Ideas,
Michael worked with designers like Don Trousdell, Mark Sandlin,
and Blair Caplinger on a wide variety of graphic projects that
included all aspects of advertising, collateral, packaging, and
signage for clients like Coca-Cola, Major League Baseball, Nike,
Anheuser Busch, financial and medical institutions, numerous airlines,
and the travel industry.
The high
level of quality demanded by the agencies and designers with whom
he worked fed Mastro's perfectionism, and cultivated his personal
design sense. When he wasn't working for ad agencies or design
firms, he was photographing musicians, developing his own style
of group portraiture. This led to work for several record labels,
and recording artists like Fleetwood Mac.
Now his
photography focuses on three subjects: Architecture, Industry,
and Tourism.
Recently,
RSA (Retirement Systems of Alabama) commissioned the artist Nall
(www.nall.org) to create a permanent exhibition in the RSA/Battle
House Hotel. Out of 25 artists and 250 works of art, 29 are Mastro's
photographs. In addition, he produced a coffee-table book called
Mobile's Cathedral, commemorating the restoration of the 154 year
old Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, in Mobile, AL. The
Mobile Press Register's Book Reviewer (and author) John Sledge
called the photography "Spectacular."
