What:
A.G. Edwards Sponsors
Exhibit of Posters and Graphic Art
When:
November
9 through January 4, 2008
Where:
Kennedy-Douglass
Center for the Arts, 217 East Tuscaloosa Street, Historic Downtown
Florence, Alabama
Description:
The
Florence branch office of A.G. Edwards will be sponsoring another
exhibit from the firm’s corporate art collection this year. Historical
Overview of Posters and Graphic Art: Selections from the Corporate
Collection of A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. will be on exhibit at
Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts in Florence from November
9 through January 4, 2008. The poster and graphic art exhibit
consists of a wide variety of images and subject matter, and features
artists from several European countries. The exhibit also includes
a few pieces from American artists, most notably works by Andy
Warhol and Milton Glaser. The local branch sponsored a successful
showing of Art by Women two years ago at the Center. “We are excited
to have the opportunity to present another fine exhibition of
quality artwork to our friends and neighbors here in the Florence
community,” says A.G. Edwards Florence branch manager Thomas Ross.
“We had such a tremendous response to our first show two years
ago; we decided back then that this was an event we had to do
again. We’re privileged to be able to host another show here,
given the large number of offices around the country that participate
in our company’s traveling exhibit program, and we hope visitors
will enjoy this show just as much as the last one — if not more.”
For the novice art enthusiast, poster art is an arena where painting,
drawing, photography and typography come together. In the decades
prior to film and television, poster graphics were the most visible
way to advertise products, places, events and ideologies to growing
urban populations. Although poster art has largely been eclipsed
today by films, radio and television, it remains a vibrant artistic
medium as well as an extraordinary social and political documentation
of modern life.
The poster
collection on display at Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts
includes works dating from 1893 through 1997 by well-known graphic
artists such as Jules Cheret, Alphonse Mucha, Ludwig Hohlwein,
Milton Glaser and Andy Warhol. While Glaser may be surpassed by
Warhol in name recognition, one of his works just might be more
familiar to the general public than the famous works of the popular
Pop artist. Commissioned by the New York State Department of Commerce,
Glaser’s firm of Milton Glaser, Inc., created the “I
♥ [love] NY” logo, which has been described as “the
most frequently imitated logo design in human history.” A Glaser
poster “The Night of the Snow Leopard” for the New York Zoological
Society is featured in the A.G. Edwards exhibit, along with Warhol’s
poster advertising the New York Film Festival of 1967. A.G. Edwards
maintains a collection of art that includes prints, photography,
and vintage posters. In 1991, the firm created the traveling exhibit
program, encouraging branch offices to partner with local art
institutions to bring selections of the corporate collection to
their communities. Since the program’s inception, A.G. Edwards
branches have collaborated with more than sixty institutions across
the country to sponsor various exhibits.

Landscape
paintings by Jason A. Saunders
When: August 14 through September 24
Monday
through Friday 9am to 4pm
Where: Kennedy-Douglass
Center for the Arts, 217 E. Tuscaloosa St., Florence, Alabama
Description: Landscape
paintings by Jason A. Saunders will be on exhibit at Kennedy-Douglass
Center for the Arts in Florence from August 14 to September 24.
Saunders is from Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee, and works primarily
in oil. He prefers to do plein air paintings, setting his easel
up out of doors before the scene he wants to depict rather than
in the studio. The paintings show the subtle interplay of light
and shadow and the peaceful harmony of colors found in nature.
His work often depicts beautiful Tennessee scenery - rolling hills,
autumn fields, forest streams, and richly-hued summer skies. "Sometimes
it seems I did not choose this path," Saunders said, "this path
somehow chose me. I am grateful for the opportunity to impress
the average window shopper, but I truly hope my canvases will
capture the eye of those who have stood a lifetime in those fields,
trying to capture the feel of that waning light. If I can accomplish
that, consistently, I have done well." Saunders is a graduate
of David Lipscomb University and has studied with renowned representational
painters Dawn E. Whitelaw, Everett Raymond Kinstler, Matt Smith,
and Scott Christensen. He is a member of the Cumberland Society
of Painters and his work is shown in galleries across Tennessee.
One of his recent plein air painting workshops was a feature story
in the quarterly journal, American Artist Workshop, Spring 2007.

March
What:
Stops
Along the Way
When:
March
12 through May 3
Where:
Kennedy-Douglass
Center for the Arts, 217 E. Tuscaloosa St., Florence, Alabama
Description:
An exhibit
of acrylic paintings by Matt Welch, will be on display at Kennedy-Douglass
Center for the Arts in Florence from March 12 through May 3. The
exhibit includes landscapes, water scenes, and architectural images
by this Decatur artist. Welch prefers to capture "discoveries"
rather than search for a particular setting. Many of the works
in the exhibit are scenes that Welch discovered as part of his
daily travels or while walking down sidewalks and hiking trails.
"My aim," said Welch, "is to capture these images that might cause
the viewer to consider them from another perspective, and just
maybe, from a slower pace. Some works capture the coolness of
a summer shade, the transition of a season, or the windows of
light through a canopy of trees. Others consider the legacy of
a scene, the abstract composition of a brick wall, or a remembrance
of a summer vacation." Originally an architecture major, Welch
turned to a career in the nuclear industry. As an artist he is
primarily self-taught, utilizing his interest in architecture
to capture each detail of a scene on canvas. His work was shown
in the Huntsville Museum of Art’s "Unique Views of Huntsville"
and in exhibits at the Carnegie Visual Art Center. He is a member
of the Huntsville Art League and an exhibiting artist at the Willis-Gray
Gallery in Decatur.
